Off Season Conditioning Golf Conditioning

Golf is Canada’s most popular sport, with a participation rate of approximately 20%. Unlike more traditional sports such as hockey, soccer and baseball, golf is played at a leisurely pace and often involves the young and old playing together. However, the game can be enjoyed throughout life, as evidenced by a number of older persons who play.

While recreational golf does not require exceptional strength to play, it does require a certain degree of flexibility. A simple off-season stretching program will increase performance and also decrease the likelihood of injury. Here are a few of my favorite stretches that help keep me limber during the off season months. If you have any concerns about performing these stretches please consult your doctor beforehand.

Chest Stretch Stand and interlock hands behind head. Gently move both elbows back and push chest forward. Hold for 10 seconds, relax, and repeat 5 times.

Reverse Truck Twist Lie on your back with your knees flexed at 90 degrees and your arms extended outwards from your body. Slowly lower both legs to the floor toward one side of your body while keeping your head elbows and shoulders touching the floor. Hold for 10 seconds, relax, and repeat 5 times.

Back Extensor Stretch Lie on your back and bring both knees towards your chest. Place hands between upper and lower legs and gently pull towards chest. Hold for 10 seconds, relax, and repeat 5 times.

If you have any questions regarding these exercises or any other golf related issue, please feel free to contact me. For additional tips please visit our web site.
